Unveiling Ancient Mysteries: The Archaeological Wonders of Bilsad, Uttar Pradesh

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) plays a pivotal role in preserving India’s rich cultural heritage. Established during the British era, ASI is responsible for the conservation of old heritage sites and monuments of national interest across the country. The department’s efforts include excavations, the study of ancient cultures and architectural features, the development of museums, and the display of old exhibits.

ASI conducts excavation work throughout India to uncover ancient civilizations. In Uttar Pradesh, ASI has three major circles in Agra, Lucknow, and Meerut. Notable excavation sites in Uttar Pradesh include Ataraji Khera, Bilsad in Etah, and Sankisa near Farukhabad. Recent discoveries at Bilsad in Etah have revealed the remains of an old temple dating back to the Gupta dynasty, shedding light on ancient architectural practices.

Bilsad, located in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, is known for its ancient Buddhist heritage and Gupta-era structures. The town is situated 6.0 kilometers from Etah and 7 kilometers from Aliganj. Historically known as Piloshana, Bilsad has been a significant site since ancient times, with inscriptions mentioning Kumar Gupta, a ruler of the Gupta dynasty.

To reach Bilsad, one can hire a cab from Agra or travel by train to Etah and then take a car to the site. Public transport options include taking a bus to Aliganj Etah and hiring a tuk-tuk to reach Bilsad.
